Mood

What is the mood of this novel? Do you find this novel saddens you in any way? Why?

The mood throughout this whole novel is really hard to describe into simple words, because it changes throughout the whole novel. In the beginning, it's exciting, fresh, and even orderly. But as the story unfolds and the boys begin to become more savage, the mood changes drastically. It comes to the point of being full of suspense and danger. This book didn't necessarily sadden me, but it disturbed me big time. I can't possibly imagine schoolboys, who were educated, to become so violent and even commit murder! Another reason it disturbed me was because this novel makes you realize that all humans have evilness within them. It is so easy to give into evil once you're tempted by it.

However, although human beings are very vulnerable, if we're determined, we can fight the evil within us, and make the right choices. Ralph reflects how a person can be both evil and good at the same time. Although Ralph participated in murdering Simon, he was very repentant about his actions and kept himself on the good path afterwards. And just look around you. You probably don't see a group of people waiting to murder you or harm you in any way. Instead, you're probably looking back into the eyes of people who care about you and love you. That means that although humans can be evil, they have compassion and kindness dominating their heart most of the times.

Hey Jenny,

I agree with you that there are no single mood. The mood, shifts significantly from a happy and joyful one, into a gloomy, dreadful mood. Merely because of the actions Jack took when he abandoned Ralph's crew to make his own. Later on, everyone followed him, except those who were civilized enough (only Ralph, Piggy, and Sam N Eric). There weren't many deaths or murders which made the mood sad, but the change of plans of the rescue and how civilized beings can shift into savagery.

The mood is truly disturbing! I wouldn't want to imagine myself in the situation,, if my friends Bryan, Jason, David, Daniel, Vincent, or Dan were marooned in that island and were killing our heads out of each other, that would be terrifing..! And yes, the book revealed that humans are capable to turn into savages.

We can control the evil nature in ourselves. Yes, you are totally right. There are some people that we displayed in the novel, like Piggy, who repented and remained civilized until his death. Many kid couldn't stand how he was mannerful and controlled that they blew their emotions and killed them. Other times, in reality, people hate you, but they don't want to kill you. You are right, humans do have a positive side because we are compassionate and caring. That's why there is a thing called FAMILY.

Nice, intriguing post~!
